The name of this stone means Turkish stone as it came to Europe by way of Turkey. Others believe that the name comes from the Persian word "fiouze" meaning the color turquoise. Turquoise is an opaque, bluetogreen mineral that is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminums, with the chemical formula CuAl6 PO4 4 OH 84H2O.  Turquoise was mined more than 6000 years ago in Sinai.

The best turquoise comes from Iran, but not much is exported now. Turquoise is found in several areas including the US  Iran Mexico Israel Afghanistan China Australia Siberia and Europe. Much turquoise comes from Mexico and the United States today.
